A toner cartridge is just that: a cartridge that contains toner. The drum does all the work. Sharp has determined that the life of drum units for this model is 18, copies and the device is equipped with a counter that will alert users when the drum is at the end of its life.

A small drum symbol will light up when the printer reaches 17, copies and when the counter hits 18, the indicator light will begin to blink and the machine will become temporarily non operational. Replacing the drum unit is done in a similar way to replacing the toner cartridge. The side and front covers of the device must be opened and the toner cartridge removed.

DO NOT discard the toner cartridge if it still has toner in it. Place the cartridge aside in as dark an area as possible. Remove the old drum unit by pulling it out of the machine; grasping it by its handle. This drum unit can be recycled through a toner cartridge recycling program.

New drums will have a protective cover on them that can be removed by pulling the tab on the cover. DO NOT remove this cover until right before the drum is to be used as it is sensitive to light.
